The Danube Valley
This excursion takes us west of Vienna. Passing through Krems, the wine capital of Austria, we arrive at the small village of Dürnstein, home to the ruins of the castle where, according to legend, Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. Along the Danube, we’ll arrive at Spitz to take the boat through beautiful landscapes to Melk (approximately 1.5 hours). The highlight of this excursion will be a visit to the Benedictine Abbey of Melk, the birthplace of Austria, built on a rock on the banks of the Danube and famous for the novel The Name of the Rose. The return to Vienna will be via the highway.
