Due to the heavy rains lasting several days in the east of the country, especially in the Lower Austria and Vienna region, in combination with local storms, some critical situations arose last weekend. Especially outside the capital, there was a huge amount of flood damage due to high levels of creeks and rivers. In Vienna itself, the Vienna River and the Danube Canal reached their highest levels, which led to some safety closures being put in place.
Parts of the motorway exits around Vienna, underpasses in the outskirts of the city as well as sections of the subway located near the river and, of course, river navigation were affected. The current situation is that the water levels are already falling, and by the middle of the week at the latest the situation should be close to normal again.
There are no obstacles or problems in the area of Vienna’s city center, where the majority of the sightseeing attractions are located, as well as in the hotel businesses in the city. Apart from sections of the ÖBB train tracks for which a travel warning applies (mainly between Linz and the Eastern Austrian border), travelling to Vienna is safe. However, small inconveniences in public transport (possibly rail replacement services from subway to bus in some sections) must be accepted.
