Grand Tour of Austria by train
This tour takes you to Austria’s most important cities by train and allows you to discover their beauty in an environmentally friendly way. We try to offer hotels at walking distance from the train stations in order to avoid transfers by car. Optional tours are mainly walking tours or regular excursions on seat-in-coach basis.
Program
Day 1: | Arrival to Vienna and accommodation. |
Day 2: | Free time at leisure or optional regular „Vienna City Tour“, that will show all the main highlights of Vienna including an interior visit to the famous Schönbrunn Palace – summer residence of the Habsburg Family. You can also join the regular „Danube Valley Tour“, that includes a boat trip on the Danube and interior visit to the Abbey of Melk. The third option is a walking tour with private guide through Vienna‘s historic city center. Starting from the world famous Vienna State Opera and strolling through the streets and squares where Empress Sisi and Emperor Francis Joseph as well as Empress Maria Theresa went for a walk you will discover the history and myths of this city. We will show you the Imperial Palace Hofburg, which is home to the Spanish Riding School, the Imperial Apartments and the Sisi Museum dedicated to the life and death of Empress Elisabeth I (exterior visit). Afterwards you will pass by St. Michael´s and St. Peter´s church until you finally reach St. Stephen’s cathedral (exterior visit), where the tour ends. Rest of the day at leisure. |
Day 3: | In the morning – transfer to Graz by train (approx. 2h35min). Arrival and check in at your hotel. In the afternoon – free time at leisure or optional walking tour with a private guide through Graz‘s historic city center: We will see a harmonious mix of architectural styles from Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque style. Let us show you the town hall, the renaissance style houses and romantic courtyards of various historic buildings. We will continue to the Schlossberg hill, with the “Clock Tower” on top, a landmark of the city of Graz. There you’ll enjoy a splendid view over the rooftops of the picturesque old town. Rest of the day at leisure. |
Day 4: | In the morning — transfer to Salzburg by train (approx. 4h). Arrival and check in at your hotel. In the afternoon — free time at leisure or optional walking tour with a private guide through Salzburg‘s historic city center. We will start our tour at the gardens of Mirabell palace. Afterwards we will cross the river “Salzach” and continue our walk to the Baroque Old Town where we can find the cathedral and the festival quarter. We’ll also see the famous street “Getreidegasse”, where Mozart’s birthplace is located. Rest of the day at leisure. |
Day 5: | Day at leisure in Salzburg. We recommend to visit Hellbrunn Palace and its trick fountains that are a real delight for the small and grown up visitors. It‘s also possible to join an optional tour through Salzburg and the Lake District, also known as Salzkammergut, which is famous for the beautiful lakes and mountains and for being the scenery of the movie „The Sound of Music“. During this tour you will visit the original film shooting locations such as Mirabell Garden, Nonnberg Convent, Leopoldskron Castle or Mondsee Church. |
Day 6: | In the morning – transfer to Innsbruck by train (approx. 1h50min). Arrival and check in at your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure or optional walking tour with a private guide through Innsbruck‘s historic city center. During our tour we will show you the Court Church (entrance fee not included), where the splendid tomb of Emperor Maximilian I is surrounded by 28 larger-than-life bronze statues. Known locally as the “Black Men”, the statues represent the Emperor’s ancestors and role models and are an expression of imperial power consciousness. We‘ll pass by the Imperial Palace and the beautiful medieval houses that make Innsbruck one of Austria‘s most enchanting cities. |
Day 7: | Day at leisure in Innsbruck, also known as Capital of the Alps due to its location in the heart of the mountains. We recommend to take a ride on the funicular and cable car Nordkettenbahn that take you right from the city center to the mountains. |
Day 8: | Check out and end of services. |
