Visit to Belvedere Palace
First, we’ll take a stroll through the gardens of the Belvedere Palace, built by Prince Eugene of Savoy as a summer residence and actually consisting of two palaces – the Lower Belvedere and the Upper Belvedere. The Belvedere Gardens are a jewel of Baroque landscape architecture. In the 18th century, they served primarily as a place for strolling and conversation, while also demonstrating the power, wisdom, and wealth of their owner. Today, they serve as a backdrop for photographs by people from all over the world. Then, we’ll visit the Upper Belvedere, which today houses the world’s largest collection of Klimt works. Late Gothic masterpieces are presented here, as well as opulent Baroque works. Major works by Johann Michael Rottmayr, Daniel Gran, and Paul Troger give an idea of the richness of that period. Masterpieces by Schiele and Kokoschka are as impressive as works of French Impressionism. But what stands out are undoubtedly Gustav Klimt’s paintings. The gilded portraits “The Kiss” and “Judith” are the center of attention and, of course, we won’t miss them.
