Lipizzaner Horses – Bärnbach – Stübing
Visit some of Styria’s most memorable sights on a day that blends Austrian tradition, bold modern art, and open-air history. Start in Piber, home to Austria’s only Lipizzaner breeding farm, where these famous white horses have been bred for over 100 years—primarily for Vienna’s renowned Spanish Riding School. You’ll hear the story behind the breed and learn how the horses are raised and cared for.
Next, stop in Bärnbach to see the remarkable parish church often called the Hundertwasser Church. Renovated in the 1980s and redesigned by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, it’s best known for its striking exterior—especially the onion-dome tower with its golden “onion,” and the vibrant walls decorated with colorful ceramic details and richly varied stucco.
Enjoy a scenic drive through rolling green countryside, with a stop for a lunch at a traditional inn. In the afternoon, step back in time at the Stübing Open-Air Museum, Austria’s largest collection of original historic buildings and farmsteads spread across 65 hectares. You’ll explore a remarkable site featuring 103 structures—each one carefully measured at its original location, dismantled, and then meticulously rebuilt in Stübing.
